"Petra Gomez, queen of the Mexican Independence Day fiesta held Tuesday and Wednesday, was helped with refreshements by David Miranda, assistant fiesta parade chairman, and Maria Alvarado at Grape Day Park Wednesday night. The two-day event attracted about 2,000 persons and was termed the most successful fiesta yet." "Three members of the Junior Woman's Club of Escondido work on putting up a 'Safety Town' at the Escondido Village Mall. The little town is used to educate youngsters from preschool through the third grade on proper procedure in safety rules. Shown (from left) are Mmes. Max Mitchell, Jack Gotherman and Verne Scheffler. 'Safety Town' will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. Saturday."

"A painting by Carmen Villalobos of an old house in a meadow, with a line of hills in the background, is admired by Robert C. Lonergan (right) and Josephine Graset. Mrs. Villalobos, the artist who painted the picture, stands behind it. It is only one of many to be shown at the annual fall show of the Showcase of the Arts. The exhibition will open Monday at the Escondido Village Mall. It will run for six days, through Saturday."
