Folder contains materials from intern Kim Laru who was a student of SJSU's School of Library and Information Science and enrolled in an internship for LIBR 294 course. Laru interned twice for the Tribal Libraries Project at San Diego North County. During her internships, she helped tribal libraries select an automated system, facilitated their purchase and conducted installation; trained tribal library staff in the use of the system; and wrote a user’s manual for future librarian to use. Folder contains various email correspondences between Laru and Biggs regarding a plethora of topics, including internship opportunities and planning internship projects when Laru and Biggs were first introduced/when the onboarding process was in motion for Laur's first internship. These emails detail the automating catalogs project. Other emails between Biggs and Laru discuss grant projects; introducing Laru to Doretta Musik and automating Pala's library; other Pala projects, such as replacing their C drive; and the possibility of presenting at the California Library Association conference. Many emails in the folder, however, relate to Laru's concerns working on an InMagic/cataloging project, due to the fact that she and other librarirans were unable to contact Mark Macarro about producing a computer in time to complete the project. One professional letter is found in the folder from Laru to Macarro, asking him to contact her about the status of the computers. Folder also contains materials related to grants and awards, such as an award letter from San Jose State University’s School of Library Science to Laru, as she was awarded the Shirley Hopkinson Award for achievement in technology (the school was impressed by her work with the San Diego Department of Water website and her role that she played in designing and implementing the cataloging database for the Tribal Libraries Project in San Diego County, she was awarded $500). Folder also contains an email from Barbara Amago, President of SLA Southern California Chapter, to Laru, congratulating her on receiving that year’s Karen Sternheim’s Memorial Scholarship; a letter of recommendation written by Biggs for Laru for the Karen Steinheim Scholarship; and an essay for a scholarship essay written by Laru, titled, “An Evolving Relationship with Special Libraries." Folder also contains miscellaenous materials, such as a Native American Book List; a “Tribal Library Internship Schedule (and phone numbers)” (from Summer 1996); and a Intern Evaluation Form prepared by Biggs for from SJSU School of Library and Information Science interns (for when Laru was assigned to Pala and Rincon Indian reservation libraries, Summer 1996).
