Early AILA history, 1980-2004
Scope and Contents
Folder contains nomination letters from the American Indian Library Association (AILA) to the American Libraries Association (ALA) committee. AILA President Naomi Caldwell-Wood and other AILA members submitted nomination emails and letters of recommendation for Dr. Lotsee Patterson to receive the ALA "Honoring our Elder" Distinguished Award from 2003 to 2005. Folder also contains letters of correspondence between Bonnie Biggs and Naomi R. Caldwell-Wood, President of the American Indian Library Association (AILA), including a possible introduction between the two librarians in 1991, regarding a draft of the "Strategic Plan for the Development of Library and Information Services to Native Americans," and the third annual American Indian Cultural Fair at CSUSM in 1992. Folder also contains ALA and AILA materials, such as conference programs, AILA/OLOS Subcommittee on Library Services to American Indians meeting minutes, correspondence regarding the planning of conference presentation, AILA membership packets and a ALA conference questionnaire. Folder also contains educational resources and photocopies of scholarly sources. Educational resources include “Selective Bibliography and Guide for 'I Is Not for Indian: The Portrayal of Native Americans in Books for Young People:' Program of the ALA:OLOS Subcommittee for Library Services to American Indian People, American Indian Library Association, Atlanta, June 29, 1991” by Naomi Caldwell-Wood, President, AILA, Lisa A. Mitten, Secretary, AILA; Lisa Mitten's list of Native American url resources; and a list of library affiliaties, including AILA. Scholarly articles include “Reforma: Advancing Quality Library Services to Latinos” by Susan C. Luevano; “Chinese-American Librarians’ Assocations: An Overview” by William W. Wan; and “Asian/Pacific american Librarians Assocation” by Suzime Har Nicolescu and Agurio Collantes. Folder also contains miscellaneous items, such as the Summer 1992 and the Spring 1991 of the American Indian Libraries Newsletter; drafts of the Constitution and Bylaws of the American Indian Library Association (1980 and 1990); and a letter from Michael S. Thompson to Rhonda Harris Taylor regarding their conversation about welcoming the AILA as a Reading Promotion Partner of the Library of Congress (1993).

Conditions Governing Access
The collection is open for research. Some materials have been restricted because of FERPA or concerns with Personally Identifiable Information. Select items/Contents have been reformatted and have digital access copies. Access to original [audio tapes, video recordings, etc.] is restricted; researchers may request viewing copies. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest.
