Scope and Contents

Folder contains email correspondences between Dr. Lotsee Patterson and various individuals, in addition to Patterson's publications. The majority of the materials in the folder are email correspondences, mostly congratulatory, whether to congradulate Biggs on the publication of her article on Patterson's career, titled, “Bright Child of Oklahoma: Lotsee Patterson and the Development of America’s Tribal Libraries;” or to thank and congratulate Patterson on her career as a librarian, and how she has served as an inspiration to the field. Additionally, the folder contains an email from CSUSM University Library Dean Marion Reid to Biggs, containing a forwarded ALA news release which stated that Patterson had been named the 2001 AHA recipient of the Beta Phi Mu Award. There are also other email correspondences between Biggs and Patterson regarding current projects and such as ALA programming, grants, and planning upcoming tribal library networking meetings. Folder also contains miscellaneous materials, such as a Proposal Data Sheet for the project, “The Community Library as a Community Education Center in Selected New Mexico Indian Reservations,” submitted to the College of Education, Educational Foundations Dept. (1977); Patterson's dissertation abstract (dissertation titled, “A Study of Perceived Media Competencies of School Libraries in the State of New Mexico”); and scripts for slides for onsite library aide training and community library development projects. Authorship of scripts include John Bowannie, Ann Pecos, and Regina Garcia; some scripts are unattributed.

Publications and printed materials in folder include: “Tribally Controlled Community College Libraries: A Paradigm for Survival” by Lotsee Patterson and Rhonda Harris Taylor” (1996, no journal name); “Native American Libraries, Ten Years Later” by Frankie Pelzman,” published in the Wilson Library Bulletin (1989); “Native American Library Services: Reclaiming the Past, Designing the Future” by Lotsee Patterson, published in the Wilson Library Bulletin (1992); “Information Needs and Services of Native Americans” by Lotsee Patterson, published in Rural Libraries (1995)

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Some materials have been restricted because of FERPA or concerns with Personally Identifiable Information. Select items/Contents have been reformatted and have digital access copies. Access to original [audio tapes, video recordings, etc.] is restricted; researchers may request viewing copies. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest.
