Scope and Contents

This folder contains Packard's view undocumented immigrantion in California during the late 1980s and into the 90s. Documents include personal letters and statements from Packard about his goal of bolstering border security at the expense of a larger checkpoint further North. Also included are newspaper clips regarding public support for the idea, as well as papers highlighting the dangers of placing checkpoints farther north of the border. Other newspapers criticize the decision to close the checkpoints. Lastly, fiscal summaries indicate the amount of funds Packard and his supporters believed they needed to reinforce border patrol and limit undocumented immigration and drugs being brought into the country from the San Diego Border.

Conditions Governing Access

This collection is open for research. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest.
