Correspondence- Military Construction Veto Overrides, 1997

 File — Box: 17
Identifier: SC016 17/06

Scope and Contents

Folder contains information on the Military Construction Line Item of 1997. President Bill Clinton used the line-veto authority to cancel 38 military construction projects that were both authorized and appropirated by Congress for the FY. The line-veto allows for the President to cancel out certain aspects of a bill, usually in relation to certain things for a budget. Congressman Packard helped to urge other politicians to support the whole bill against the line-veto, which helped result in Clinton admitting he made "a mistake", resulting in an override. Also included is information on the Civil Rights Act of 1997.
