Scope and Contents

CSUSM Special Collections serials include newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and other regularly and irregularly published titles relevant to North San Diego County and its constituent communities. Materials span from 1907 to present day, with the bulk of materials spanning from the 1920s to the 1980s. Titles held by the library include San Diego and San Diego County newspapers, newspapers geared towards specific communities, military newspapers, underground newspapers, chamber of commerce publications, newsletters from nonprofits or published to assist specific communities or inform around focused issues, and magazines.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Access to fragile originals is restricted when access copies are available. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest. Please note that Special Collections and University Archives observes all campus holiday closures as noted in the Library Calendar. For more information, please send an email to archives@csusm.edu.

Property rights reside with California State University San Marcos. Copyrights are retained by the creators of the records and their heirs. For permission to reproduce or to publish, please contact archives@csusm.edu.

Some materials are in the public domain. No permission is needed to reproduce or publish from these materials, though applicable Reading Room policies may apply. Please contact Special Collections at archives@csusm.edu if you need reproductions made.

Overview

California State University San Marcos Special Collections serials consist of newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and similar printed publications from San Diego County and/or focused on issues and events regarding San Diego County.

Arrangement

The serials collection has been arranged title and when possible chronological by date. Each title is a file-level description, unless the library only holds one title, in which case arrangement and description is to the individual item level. Some publications have an item-level listing by issue in the library's holdings. Context provided at the series level about antecedent and descendent titles.

Special Collections serials are kept in Kellogg Library, Room 1301/3. Specific location information is listed for each title.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Serials have been collected by the library in a variety of means including purchase, donation, and removal from the Library's general collection.

Accruals

The library is actively collecting both current and ceased serial publications. Further accruals are expected.

Existence and Location of Copies

The Escondido Historical Newspapers (Escondido Times-Advocate, Escondido Times, Weekly Free Press, and Weekly Times-Advocate) were digitized through newspapers.com and CSUSM has access to the digital surrogates of the microfilm for the university's campus community. A campus sign-on is necessary to view these materials.

The Dan Rios papers include an estimated one million images, as well as correspondence related to the news photography of the Escondido Times-Advocate and North County Times newspapers.

The Paul Ecke Ranch, Inc. business records and family papers hold a multitude of publications related to floriculture in San Diego County, including a significant number of periodicals.
