Scope and Contents

The Bonnie Biggs papers relate to the work, scholarship, and service of former Cal State San Marcos Librarian Emeritus and inaugural Tribal Liaison, Bonnie Biggs. A significant subset of the collection is also concerned with the professional life of Dr. Lotsee Patterson (Comanche), an instrumental figure in the development of tribal libraries in the United States. Materials related to CSUSM's Tribal Liaison; CSUSM's Native Advisory Council; CSUSM's California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center (CICSC); the CSUSM Tukwut mascot, sculpture, and courtyard; tribal libraries in the U.S. Southwest and Southern California; and the American Indian Libraries Association also feature prominently in the collection, as does Biggs' scholarship and service during her time as Tribal Liaison at CSUSM.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Some materials have been restricted because of FERPA or concerns with Personally Identifiable Information. Select items/Contents have been reformatted and have digital access copies. Access to original [audio tapes, video recordings, etc.] is restricted; researchers may request viewing copies. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest. Biographical / Historical

Bonnie Biggs was born in Southern California in 1951. She graduated from Vista High School in 1969, got her BA from San Diego State University in 1982. Biggs worked in the Encinitas and Solana Beach County libraries for thirteen years where her interest in outreach to underserved communities began. She received her Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University of Southern California in 1985. She joined the library at San Diego State University, North County in 1986, and transitioned to the library when California State University San Marcos was formed in 1989. In her time at CSUSM, Biggs served as Assistant to the Dean, Coordinator for Public Services and University Coordinator for Arts & Lectures. When Biggs retired from the faculty in 2004, she was asked to serve as the first Tribal Liaison in the CSU system. She served in that capacity for 3 years.

A significant subset of the collection is also concerned with the professional life of Dr. Lotsee Patterson (Comanche), an instrumental figure in the development of tribal libraries in the United States.

Arrangement

Whenever possible, the Bonnie Biggs papers have been arranged in accordance with their original order. Four series exist in the papers:

-- Series one: Tribal Liaison, California State University San Marcos, 1992-2024 -- Series two: Tribal libraries history and activities, 1928-2006 -- Series three: Dr. Lotsee Patterson, 1970-2005 -- Series four: Scholarship and service, 1988-2003

Series three and four were originally in a fonds titled "Lotsee, AILA presidency, Forum III." While documents have been kept in their original order, the series were renamed.
