Scope and Contents
Four linear feet of records from the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSUSM which relate to the history, operations, planning and implementation, and funding of the institute. Some records also relate more generally to palliative treatment, the practice of treatments intended to afford relief from disease, but not cure. Most records in the collection are physical records, with some digital files--268 photographs--included.

Conditions Governing Access
This collection is open for research. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest. Please note that Special Collections and University Archives observes all campus holiday closures as noted in the Library Calendar. For more information, please send an email to archives@csusm.edu.

Biographical / Historical
The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSUSM promotes community awareness of palliative care and supports professional education of future palliative care providers.
Founded in 2014 and sustained by the Office of the President at CSUSM, the Shiley Haynes Institute sponsors programs and events to educate our campus and neighboring communities about the goals and benefits of palliative care. It supports faculty and students in teaching and learning about palliative care as offered in medicine, nursing, social work, and chaplaincy.
The Shiley Haynes Institute also partners with local palliative care providers to develop and enhance their programming and offers professional conferences and networking opportunities for the local Palliative treatment provider community.
The institute's original name was the CSU Institute for Palliative Care at CSUSM.

Collection is arranged in accordance with original order of documents as they were transferred to the library. Collection contains three series: 1) Operations (2012-2020); 2) Notebooks (2012-2022); and 3) Fundraising (2012-2021).

Processing Information
Processed by Sean Visintainer, September 2025. A MPLP (more product, less process) approach was employed; original order was kept, language was transcribed from existing housing when possible, and some metal was not removed. Paper "staples" were created in place of paperclips and binder clips.
