Scope and Contents
As Camp Callan was only in exitence from 1940 to 1945, the library's holdings of the Range Finder largely encompass the life of the military base, as they begin in 1941 and end in 1945. However, there is a significant gap in the library's holdings - the entire year of 1944.

Biographical / Historical
Camp Callen was a Coast Artillery Corps training center named for Major General Robert Callan. It was built in 1940 and declared surpuls in 1945, at which time most of its buildings were purchased by the city of San Diego and sold for salvage.
The Range Finder was the base's newspaper, and was "Published by and for the soldiers and civilians of Camp Callan, San Diego, California."

Library holdings contain bound volumes that in some cases overlap in temporal coverage. Many of the newspapers are in quite fragile condition.
Bound volume "The Range Finder April 4, 1941 - Sept 30, 1943" contains the following incriptions: "This book was kept by Colonel Masteller, and ends with his retirement." and "Merry Christmas, Happy New Year 1942. To our Editor-in-chief Col. Kenneth C. Masteller from Capt. Earl W. [Forter?], Public Relations Officer (Riverside Daily Press, Omaha Daily News,) Joseph S.
