From the Collection:

CSUSM Special Collections serials include newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and other regularly and irregularly published titles relevant to North San Diego County and its constituent communities. Materials span from 1907 to present day, with the bulk of materials spanning from the 1920s to the 1980s. Titles held by the library include San Diego and San Diego County newspapers, newspapers geared towards specific communities, military newspapers, underground newspapers, chamber of commerce publications, newsletters from nonprofits or published to assist specific communities or inform around focused issues, and magazines.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research. Access to fragile originals is restricted when access copies are available. The Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room is accessible by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8am - 4pm. Final requests for materials must be made one hour prior to closing. Please submit requests for archival materials at least 24 hours in advance of desired appointment. Materials requested over the weekend will be available on the following Tuesday at the earliest. Biographical / Historical

The Rose was a gay entertainment guide of The Southland area of California, written and published mostly from a gay men's perspective. The Rose was published twice monthly and distributed to Garden Grove, Long Beach, Palm Springs, Pomona, Oceanside, Laguna Beach, Riverside, San Bernardino, Miami, Fort Lauderdaile, Dallas, Phoenix, Denver, San Diego, and with limited distribution in Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco.
